Email delivery. It's something that's important to every business. But if yours aren't getting through, this is probably why
Today we’re chasing down a frustrating problem that affects a lot of people: email bounces. If your emails aren’t arriving or are getting marked as spam, the issue might be with your email authentication settings.
Most people don't know, that there's quite a bit that goes on in the background when it comes to email delivery.
Let me walk you through the three most important things that help your emails get delivered properly: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.
An email bounce happens when your message doesn’t reach its destination. Sometimes that’s because of simple issues, like a full inbox or a misspelled address. But often, it’s because the receiving mail server doesn’t trust that your email really came from you. In short, your customers or suppliers don't get your email.
That’s where SPF, DKIM, and DMARC come in.
SPF is like a list that says which mail servers are allowed to send emails on behalf of your domain. If a server that’s not on the list tries to send something, many email providers will reject it or send it straight to spam.
Why it matters: Without SPF, anyone can try to send email pretending to be you. With SPF, you’re telling the world, “Only these mail servers are allowed to send email from my domain.”
DKIM adds a digital signature to every email you send. This signature proves that the message really came from your domain and hasn’t been tampered with along the way.
Why it matters: It builds trust. If the message has a valid DKIM signature, it’s far less likely to get flagged or blocked.
DMARC is the rule set that brings SPF and DKIM together. It tells receiving servers what to do if an email fails one or both of those checks. You can choose to let the message through, send it to spam, or block it completely.
Why it matters: DMARC gives you control over your domain and lets you monitor any attempts to impersonate you through regular reports.
Because without these tools, your emails might not be getting delivered. That could mean lost invoices, unread newsletters, or even security risks if someone tries to impersonate your domain.
Think of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC like ID tags for your email. They prove your emails are coming from a trusted source and help protect your business reputation.
